DTS spinal decompression

Disc pain, without surgery.

The facts about spinal decompression, including what it costs, so you can make an informed decision.

A note from Dr. Haynes

No free-report runaround.

You’ve probably seen newspaper ads that hype spinal decompression and tell you to call an unknown doctor’s office for a “free report” in the mail. We don’t believe anyone should have to do that.

This page gives you the facts about DTS spinal decompression therapy, including the approximate cost, so you can decide what’s right for your condition. Our fees are a fraction of what some clinics charge.

If you need any other information, call the office at 661-322-2875 and ask to speak with me. That’s right: I’ll talk with you personally to help you make the right decision.

Questions & answers

Spinal decompression FAQ

What is DTS spinal decompression therapy?

DTS spinal decompression is an FDA-cleared, non-surgical, traction-based therapy for back and leg pain or neck and arm pain caused by herniated or bulging discs, even after failed surgery. By cycling between distraction and relaxation with careful positioning, a disc can be isolated and placed under negative pressure, creating a vacuum effect inside it.

What does the vacuum effect do?

Two things. Mechanically, disc material that has bulged or herniated outside the disc can be drawn back in. And the negative pressure encourages blood supply to the area, starting a healing response that reduces pain.

What system do you use?

The Triton® DTS system made by Chattanooga, a leading manufacturer of physical medicine equipment. We have two complete systems, so you won’t wait for your session.

How is it different from regular traction?

The Triton’s computer varies the traction pull, ramping up and down in preprogrammed patterns. That avoids the muscle guarding typical of conventional traction and allows a higher level of decompression and disc rehydration.

Who can benefit?

Anyone whose back or neck pain is caused in whole or in part by a damaged disc, including herniated, protruding or bulging discs, spinal stenosis, sciatica and radiculopathy (pinched nerves).

Is there research behind it?

Yes. One study documented, by MRI, up to a 90% reduction of disc herniations in 10 of 14 cases, and other studies reported good to excellent results for most ruptured-disc patients.

Who should not have it?

It isn’t recommended for pregnant women, or for patients with severe osteoporosis, severe obesity or severe nerve damage. Spinal surgery with hardware (screws, plates or cages) also rules it out, but decompression can be done after fusion or non-fusion surgery without hardware.

Does it hurt? How many sessions will I need?

In almost every case the treatment is completely painless. Some patients fall asleep during the session. The best results in current research come from about 20 sessions over six weeks; the doctor sets your plan after your exam.

Will I have other therapy too?

Usually. To reduce inflammation and help healing, supporting structures are treated with passive therapies (ice, heat, muscle stimulation), chiropractic adjustments when indicated, and active rehab to strengthen the spinal muscles.
